Hello everyone!

Welcome back to our blog. In today’s post, we wanted to discuss some student opinions on the delayed sleep times which have been proposed to help adolescents improve sleep quality and time.

“The later sleep time actually allowed me to gain one hour of sleep.”

“It’s a lot easier to wake up when it is actually light outside.”

“I prefer waking up later even if it means I am playing sports late at night.”

“Sleeping late at night has defined my high school career. If anything the change in sleep time has allowed me to regain that hour of sleep.”

In addition, we spoke with some of the overwhelmed students in our community to see how a lack of sleep impacts them. We heard a lot about the societal pressure that forced them to take AP classes, leading to hours of homework. This often ended in sleep deprivation.

The later sleep times allow students to sleep in during the morning to compensate for the time lost doing homework at night. Many schools in the local region have already proposed plans to implement later school times for high school students. For example, at our school, the timing has shifted from 7:25 am to 8:00 am. As the trend continues to catch on throughout the schools of the United States, there may be hope to improve sleep duration and quality for adolescents.

See you next time,

Nan and Sri
