In today’s blog post, we wanted to introduce you to some major sleep disorders that impact many people throughout the world.


  • Insomnia is the inability to initiate or maintain sleep. Its impact is often manifesting excessive daytime sleepiness and causing functional impairment throughout the rest of the day. It is a common sleep disorder that creates difficulty in initiating sleep, decreasing energy, quality of life, and mood

    • Symptoms:

      • Difficulty initiating sleep at night

      • Waking up at night/early

      • Daytime fatigue

      • Anxiety surrounding sleep


  • Narcolepsy is excessive daytime sleepiness with sudden muscle weakness and a sleep disorder that creates drowsiness or periods of sleep during the daytime.

    • Symptoms

      • Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

      • Loss of Muscle Tone

      • Sleep Paralysis

      • Hallucinations


  • Restless leg syndrome is a condition in which an uncomfortable uncontrollable sensation creeps up in the legs that requires relief of symptoms. There may be abnormalities in the neurotransmitter dopamine.

    • Symptoms:

      • Sensation During Resting

      • Relief Following Discomfort

      • Worsening Symptoms at Night

      • Changes in Mood

      • Daytime Fatigue


  • Sleep Apnea is a disruption in breathing during sleep caused by obstruction/blockage of the airway or due to lack of control from the brain to control breathing. Treatment includes pressure of air into the airways to keep the ducts open.

    • Symptoms

      • Daytime Fatigue

      • Repeated Awake Spurts During Sleep

      • Unusual Breathing Patterns


  • REM Sleep Behavior Disorder is a sleep condition in which people act out their dreams (failed immobilization).

    • Symptoms:

      • Movements During Sleep

        • Mimicking a Dream

      • Noises

        • Screaming, laughing, crying

      • Recollection of Dream
